What can I compost?
Essentially, anything that was once living can be composted. However, to avoid generating odours and attracting pests such as rats, birds and flies, it’s best to limit home composting to just plant derived materials. That means no animal products, parts or pieces. Strictly a vegetarian diet for your compost!
This rule of thumb applies to most compost piles and bin systems. There are also systems for composting food waste that are designed to handle meat, fish, and dairy waste as well as vegetable waste, so have a look at the “types of composters” page to find out more about these.
