Fall foliage – also known as Autumn leaves!

As summer heads off in the rear view mirror (thankfully very slowly) and autumn sets in, one of the best resources for home composting is falling all around us – leaves! If you have a lot of leaves in your garden you may find them annoying at times but when it comes to composting they are fantastic. Gathered and left to decompose on their own they will break down over time to form a lovely mulch. However, if you have the time and space to gather and store a number of large piles they are ideal to use during the summer months to compost with your grass and food waste. Leaves can be stored in the open, in a simple wire enclosure to prevent them from blowing away or, if gathered when moist, they can be stored in bags that have a few air holes in them. International Compost Awareness Week 2015

  Coming this May is International Compost Awareness week. An initiative of the US Compost Council, it encourages people and communities to organise activities to promote compost as locally sustainable solution to managing some of our organic wastes. Home composting is the ideal way to reuse most of your garden and kitchen waste and you can use the compost to improve the soil in your vegetable garden. Compost is magical stuff – especially if you have made it at home yourself. It is full of nutrients and life. It improves the soil’s fertility, texture, structure and moisture and nutrient-holding capacity. And remember, healthy soils grow healthy, disease resistant plants. Chocoholics Victoria Sandwich Recycled Chocolate fridge cake Chocolate Chip cookies Rice krispie or popcorn chocolate bars!   Chocoholic’s Victoria Sandwich This is great fun – and a brilliant way to use up all the chocolates in one, glorious Willy Wonka extravaganza of molten exuberance.  4 free-range eggs Unsalted butter, softened Caster sugar Self-raising flour A pinch of salt 1 tsp vanilla extract A little milk, if needed About 350-400g Easter egg chocolate and their chocolatey fillings (Maltesers, mini Crunchies and Mars bars work very well) Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4 and position a shelf in the centre of the oven. Carefully grease two 20cm sandwich tins and line them with baking parchment. Weigh the eggs (still in their shells) and make a note of their weight.
